POWDER POINT BRIDGE · DUXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS
A Crossing That Has Connected Duxbury for Generations
For more than 130 years, a timber bridge across Duxbury Bay has provided a direct connection between Powder Point and Duxbury Beach.
THE HISTORY
More than a century across the bay
The original Powder Point Bridge dates to the 1891–1892 era. Built as a timber crossing over Duxbury Bay, it established a direct route from Powder Point to Duxbury Beach that has remained part of the community ever since.
Ownership of the bridge was transferred to the Town of Duxbury in 1941. The Town has since been responsible for its maintenance, repairs and reconstruction.
After a fire and the discovery of significant deterioration in 1985, the bridge was reconstructed in timber in 1986 and reopened in 1987. The structure standing today dates from that reconstruction.
A LONGSTANDING DUXBURY CROSSING
Town Meeting Acts
Duxbury voters approved moving forward with a bridge and authorized borrowing for the crossing.
Original Timber Bridge
The original bridge was constructed across Duxbury Bay, creating the direct Powder Point connection to the beach.
Town Ownership
Ownership of Powder Point Bridge was transferred to the Town of Duxbury.
Fire and Closure
A fire and the discovery of significant deterioration led to the closure and reconstruction of the bridge.
Timber Reconstruction
The bridge was reconstructed in timber in 1986 and reopened to the public in 1987.
A Town Owned Asset
Powder Point Bridge remains Duxbury’s direct road connection across the bay to Duxbury Beach.
THE CONNECTION
2,200 feet that connect Duxbury to its beach
Powder Point Bridge spans approximately 2,200 feet across Duxbury Bay. It is the only direct road connection between mainland Duxbury and Duxbury Beach.
For generations, the experience of crossing the bay has been part of beach days, fishing, recreation and everyday life in Duxbury.
The physical bridge has changed during its history, but the location and purpose of this crossing have remained remarkably consistent.
WHERE THINGS STAND
The bridge is now at a major decision point
MassDOT Project 612006 is currently programmed as a complete Design-Build replacement of Powder Point Bridge. At the same time, questions about rehabilitation, preservation, condition, funding and long-term impacts continue to be examined.
Current Bridge
The existing bridge is the timber structure reconstructed in 1986 and reopened in 1987.
Replacement Project
MassDOT currently lists the project as a complete Design-Build replacement. The 25% design package was received in May 2026.
Alternatives
Rehabilitation and preservation remain important questions as residents examine what options are technically and financially possible before construction commitments are made.
CONDITION & REHABILITATION
Understanding what can be repaired
Recent inspections have documented substantial deterioration in portions of the existing timber structure. They have also identified significant amounts of serviceable timber.
Independent timber specialists reviewing the bridge in 2026 recommended staged repairs and additional Level III structural analysis to better determine the capacity and condition of the bridge.
Other engineering reviews have agreed that timber restoration is technically possible in principle while raising important questions about cost, remaining pile condition, maintenance and long-term economics.
Those questions are exactly why preservation and replacement alternatives should be compared using the same level of engineering, cost and life-cycle analysis.
